March Madness—also known as the ‘Big Dance’ to college hoops fanatics—kicked off yesterday, but today, our top story in the world of sports comes from the tournament’s storied past. The time is 1992, and the two teams in question are Duke and Kentucky. The moment? The most famous buzzer beater in NCAA history.
With only 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime, Duke was one point away from getting bumped in the tournament by Kentucky. Hope seemed lost, as the Blue Devils regained possession of the basketball on the far end of the court. In other words, they not only needed to hurl the ball down the length of the court, but also score before time expired. It was a tall order, but it was one that a young Grant Hill—yes, the Phoenix Suns’ Grant Hill—and college hoops all-star Christian Laettner were ready to tackle.
And so, facing elimination, Hill hurled a Hail Mary pass down to Laettner, who had not missed a single shot that night, and the rest was, as they say, history. With a turnaround jumper, Laettner nailed the shot just as the buzzer rang. The collective look of dismay on Kentucky’s face was priceless, and Duke sailed onto the next round.
Hopefully, we see some similar exploits in this year’s tournament, but I’m not holding my breath.
