Play of the Day: Washington Capitals' Alexander Semin Scores An 80-Foot Game-Winning Goal

Being the sole reason your team loses a deadlocked, overtime game must be a bitter pill to swallow, especially if you’re the goalie who failed to stop an 80-foot shot from breezing past your apparently paper-thin defenses.

Tim Thomas, the Boston Bruins goalie, learned this lesson the hard way on Saturday when he allowed Washington Capitals’ Alexander Semin’s slap shot to cruise between his legs and end the 3-3 stalemate in the blink of an eye.

Granted, the speed at which a puck travels is probably faster than the average person’s response time, but a professional goalie should not only be accustomed to the speed, but also able to anticipate such long-distance shots. Naturally, Thomas knew he had screwed up the moment he heard the goal siren wail, which is why he quickly skated off the ice—undoubtedly returning to the locker room to cry bitter tears at his monumental blunder.

Can you blame him, though? I mean everyone is entitled to a major screw-up now and again, but this… this is almost unforgivable. A mistakes like this one is the sort of thing that can make a person question themselves. So, I wish Thomas all the best of luck during his forthcoming weeks of therapy.
