Princeton Traditions: A Video Slideshow of Cane Spree 2008

In 1865, Princeton upperclassmen declared that freshmen at the school were no longer allowed to carry canes on campus. This class-wide hazing ultimately led to a physical altercation on Nassau Street between a group of freshmen and sophomores when the latter attempted to “enforce” the rule.

Since that historic brawl, representatives of the freshman and sophomore classes have met every fall to compete in an array of athletic competitions, including wrestling, swimming, football and basketball, in an event known as the “Cane Spree.”

Today, instead of taking their canes, victors win a t-shirt bearing their fallen opponent’s class number.

This year was no different, and thankfully, The Daily Princetonian was there to capture all the festivities – in video slideshow form.
