Ray Boltz: Proving You Can Be Gay And Christian

In college it’s easy to get pigeonholed based on stereotypes: frat boy, theater nerd, crazy Christian, gay best friend.

In real life though, away from the university bubble, you may find yourself redefining who you are. For gospel singer Ray Boltz that meant coming out publicly. No big deal, right? It seems like celebs are coming out of the closet left and right these days (although Clay Aiken, we’re still waiting on you…)

But for Boltz there’s one minor difference. He’s a Christian and not just one of those “woo hoo it’s Christmas, so I love Jesus” kind of Christians. He’s the kind that’s sold 4.5 million LPs, cassettes and CDs based on Christianity. A lot of times the whole homosexuality thing doesn’t go over so well with the religious thing. Gay and Christian is as hard to admit to as Gay and Fraternity Guy usually is. Still, Boltz couldn’t keep pretending.

The Washington Blade has the story:

“I didn’t make a big deal of it,” Boltz says during a 90-minute phone interview from his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. “But I was trembling. I’d kind of had two identities since I moved to Florida where I kind of had this other life and I’d never merged the two lives. This was the first time I was taking my old life as Ray Boltz, the gospel singer, and merging it with my new life. Emotionally it was kind of a big deal to think about that.”

Ray Boltz was tired of living a lie.

It’s not too surprising that Boltz kept his secret gay identity in Florida. After all, the state is home to South Beach, the gay mecca of America (outside San Fran of course).

Congrats on the bravery Boltz. At OTR, we salute you.

Gay men can have biological children you know, modern day medical technology has allowed that. As far as waiting on him to announce it, it is easier said than done. This will be something that he will have to stand in front of God and answer for - if he even gets that chance. I just came from Ray Boltz' concert at the Jesus Metropolitan Christian Chruch in Indy this evening. Ray's new collection of songs will help countless young people struggling with their sexual identities.
The lives it will save will be significant. For those who are judging (oops..a sin) walk a mile in someone's shoes who doesn't believe what you have interpreted. I did not understand why this article appeared to single out Clay Aiken with the reference, "waiting for Clay Aiken." What is the relevance? Why the concern?What is the problem? It just seems this individual should be left alone to handle his own affairs, just like anyone else for that matter. We in the Christian community need to be careful how we respond to Ray's coming out. Blanket condemnation is not the answer. I have enjoyed his music for years. However, we also need to realize that choices have consequences. His choice to be who he wants to be means the break up of a family. Dad isn't home for the kids anymore. It is the most overused reason to justify something that is obviously wrong and against what God says. Wow . . .this news is kind of a shock to me but each one of us make our choices and there is always a blessing or consequence to it. We need to pray for Ray Boltz. We also need to pray for the illiterate Christians who cannot spell simple words and thus appear as uneducated Bible thumpers.

I am a Christian and I do believe that homosexuality is a sin, and while that sin does not appeal to me or tempt me, I realize that there are many other sins that do and I must seek God's wisdom and make Godly choices. Our God offers second chances and His grace and forgiveness is complete to those who confess and repent of their sin. My pet peeve are proclaiming Christians who live in contradiction to God's Word and then try to blame God for it. We are big boys and girls . . . we make our choices, and then our choices make us . . . and we reap what we sow, every one of us.

Proving you can be Gay and Christian? Ray Boltz's situation only proves that he is gay and confused. Someone who is truly a follower of Christ cannot be gay at the same time. Homosexuality isn't just a sin. It's a sinful lifestyle, meaning it is a daily practice. God has no fellowship with darkness and cannot reside where there is sin. So you make a choice. You either decide to follow Christ, or you decide to live in sin.

Let the Bible interpret itself. In Ezekiel 16:49-50, we are told what the sin of Sodom was:

#1) Prideful arrogance of all they had.

#2) Total lack of charity and concern for those in need.

#3) Haughtiness.

#4) Idolatry.

The New Testament (Brit Hadasha) also has something to say about the sin of Sodom and Gomarrah. It is recorded in Matthew 10:12-15; Mark 6:10-11; and Luke 10:10-12. These verses tell us that inhospitality was the sin of Sodom and Gomarrah. This goes along with what is said in the Old Tastament (Tanakh) in the book of Ezekiel.

People who call themselves Christians, or Jewish belivers, have got to stop taking preconceived ideas and hatreds and then adding them to what the Bible really says!

All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God, once forgiven we are to repent, which means turn away and not fall back into the trap. It's just that simple but it's not easy. Mr. Boltz simply chose to quit fighting. Ray Boltz knows the truth, and I hope at some point the truth will set him free. He said the he basically live the life of an "ex-gay" for 30+ years. He read every book he could find. He did everything he could do. He admits he didn't really seek out help from organizations that could offer it. He tried to do it on his own. He said he eventually became suicidal, and decided he couldn't go on pretending. He said he had begged God to take away his attraction, but God didn't. Paul begged to have the "thorn in his side removed", but God didn't. Paul still went on to overcome/live with the "thorn" and do marvelous things for God. I do believe some people are changed, others still have a life long fight with same-sex attraction. Ray can't do it on his own, yet that is what it sounds to me like he did. He gave in, rather than giving the battle to the Lord. "No weapon that's fashioned against us can stand, the battle belongs to the Lord". The thing about living your life as a Christian...It is NOT easy...you will be attacked from all sides...but in the end...WE WIN. Why wouldn't you want to play on the winning team?! It isn't about if we seem to be losing the game. It doesn't matter if it's half time or 4th quarter! No matter what the score is right now, now matter how desolate it seems right now, WE WIN! I pray the Ray can see that and come back to stand in God's will. I have begged people to show me in the Christian faith where it is OK and approved by God to be gay? Show me! Prove it to me!No one has. Standing in the faith and by God's word is often very hard because of attacks by "open minded" people. There is no hate here for Ray Bolts, only love.
