The anxious silence was finally broken with the roar of thunderous clapping and cheering as the Red Sox won the World Series two years in a row. A sure sign that the Curse of the Bambino was broken, a crowd of devoted Red Sox fans gathered outside my window to display their Red Sox Nation pride and tread all over the dwindling dignity the Connecticut Yankee fans had left.
The Red Sox’s victory was just the beginning of a comeback for New Englanders. Back in February, New Englanders were put to the test again when the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl. Although they lost to the Giants, there wasn’t an ounce of bitterness as the last few seconds of the game brought victory to the G-men. With a terribly close score, the Pats fans found comfort in knowing they had a great season with a close final game.
A state usually in sports loyalty limbo, Connecticut is typically torn between the teams of New England and the teams of New York, but it seems that they have finally chosen. A Quinnipiac poll has recently shown that the New England-ish state of Connecticut has decided to stick with the Red Sox.
The poll showed 41% of Connecticut baseball fans sided with the Boston-bred team as a close 40% chose the New York men in the thin blue stripes. This is a record first time in five years that the Red Sox held a candle to the popularity of the Yankees in Connecticut but now the Sox have demonstrated that they have arrived and are here to stay.
Now all the Bostonians have left is to fully convert the Constitution state into a full New England team republic. But with the basketball victory of the Boston Celtics and the Patriots' amazing season, this task should be complete by next year's time.
