You know Bratz dolls, those little, disproportionate plastic dolls that are corrupting the youth of our nation with their exposed midriffs and sassy attitudes. Well, we might not have to deal with them for that much longer.
A judge has granted Mattel an injunction that says that MGA Entertainment has to stop making Bratz Dolls that violate Mattel’s copyrights. How did this happen? Well, apparently Barbie designer Carter Bryant came up with the Bratz name and characters and took the ideal to MGA in secret. Guess the cat's out of the bag.
It’s unclear exactly how many of the Bratz dolls are infringing on this copyright, but you can be damn sure it’s a lot of them. Mattel was also awarded $100M in damages, although they were shooting for $2B. Yeah, I’m sure they were.
So what does the market thing about all this?
“Mattel still has to make dolls kids want,” McGowan (business analyst) said in a phone interview. “It’s not just a matter of getting rid of your competitors.”
What? Where has he been? It’s the Microsoft model! Next, up G.I. Joe! We want every boy in America playing with an “Army Ken Doll.”
