The Six Worst Diets for College

The Six Worst Diets for College

As New Year's Resolutions pour in, many of us are trying to get back into shape and get bathing-suit worthy by the summer. There are all kinds of fads out there, from the cabbage soup diet to the no-carb diet. Does it all work? Is any of it real? Newsweek gives us a little help by letting us know the six WORST dieting ideas out there.

1) Fat-Free Diet

When we see the "Fat Free!!!!" label on half the foods on the supermarket, we'd like to believe that it means it's totally healthy to eat. There are fat-free chips, cookies, candy-- maybe if you don't EAT fat, you won't get fat!

Reality Check: Fat isn't just about intake. Fat free foods can still have tons of sugar, sodium, and empty calories. Check the label!

2) Snack Pack Diet

I just saw a commercial for Oreo Cakesters 100 Calorie Snack Packs. Eating these 100-Calorie packs may satisfy your cravings and are only 100 calories! You Can't go wrong!

Reality Check: Unfortunately, these packs still aren't truly healthy, and lack fiber, so you'll probably still be hungry and want to eat another bag. Instead try some fruit, or a half-sandwich made on Whole Wheat bread.

3) Couch Potato Diet

If you just eat less, you don't need excercise. The fat will melt away!

Reality Check: Yeah, you might EVENTUALLY lose weight, but it will take double the time, and you're way less-likely to keep the weight off. Adding any excercise to your routine can help you lower weight as well as lower cholesterol and heart issues-- even a brisk 20-30 minute walk every day.

4) Detox Plan

Clean out your insides with concoctions with ingredients ranging from wheat grass to chile pepper, to molasses.

Reality Check: There is no evidence that cleaning out your insides makes you healthier. And all you really need to detox is get some fiber in your diet (bring on the prunes!!)

5) The MEAT MEAT MEAT diet

Protein is your friend. All protein all the time. Fat doesn't matter, just get on your protein. And eat more bacon, dammit.

Reality Check: "Cutting down on carbs, especially empty carbs like white flour and white rice, can help you lose weight, but a diet that contains large amounts of fatty meat simply isn't healthy. A better choice would be leaner proteins, like fish or chicken (grilled or broiled without the skin), plus five servings of fruit and vegetables, a serving or two of whole-grain carbs and some low-fat dairy."

6) The Twinkie Diet

All that matters is low calories. If you only eat Twinkies, but stay under your calorie limit. You're fine.

Reality Check: Yes, Calories count, but so do vitamins and health. If you only eat junk, you'll lack vital nutrients necessary to lead an active lifestyle.
