Spike TV Producing a College Football Comedy Series

In a thinly veiled attempt to appeal to the college demographic, Spike TV is producing a football-themed comedy series based on the wonders of NCAA football.

The show, entitled “Blue Mountain State,” follows three freshmen attending a college by the same name in the Midwest who must “quickly adapt to college life and juggle football, girls, classes and nonstop hazing.”

Oh joy! It’s another shallow attempt at mirroring the success of “Animal House.” Expect this to be a watered down version of Jim Belushi’s cult classic mixed with Craig T. Nelson’s "Coach."

Reuters reports:

Former NFL running back-turned-actor Ed Marinaro stars as the team's coach. Darin Brooks ("Days of Our Lives") plays Alex, a talented quarterback content to ride the bench while partying with his best friend, Sammy (co-writer Chris Romano), who aspires to be the school's mascot. Sam Jones III ("ER") plays Craig, the school's top recruit and future pro whose life already is mapped out for him by his controlling girlfriend, Denise (Gabrielle Dennis).

Brian Robbins ("Varsity Blues") is executive producing and will direct the pilot, which goes into production in February. Romano co-wrote the pilot with Eric Falconer ("The Sarah Silverman Program").

Wow, this is a who’s who compendium of D-list celebrities from equally subpar television and film series (except ER; that show rocks).

Plus, you know, it’s Spike; this bad boy was doomed from the start.
