Back in the late 80s/early 90s, “Iron” Mike Tyson was a heavyweight boxer who was both feared and revered. Then, Don King came into the picture and changed everything with a slew of calculated decisions and arranged matches that led to Tyson’s cataclysmic fall from grace.
Few would argue that Tyson’s woes—if you understand him to a be nothing more than a poor, misguided individual—first began in the late 80s when the gray-haired, loudmouthed manager Don King took hold of his career and guided it into the gutter.
Under the tutelage of his former manager and trainer Cus D’Amato, would Tyson have become the man he is today? Or, would he have earned his spot within the annals of history by becoming a celebrated, admired boxing legend?
These are but a few of the questions that this documentary on Mike Tyson—releasing sometime in April—attempts to ascertain through a series of one-on-one, heart-to-heart interviews with the man himself. Sadly, history has already been written, and we will never truly know what Tyson would’ve become under different circumstances. But, at least with this film, we can look back and better understand the tragedy of his career.
