For those of you who live in a cave at the bottom of the ocean, today is Election Day, and instead of sitting around wishing I posted some scandal about Theta Chi burning AXO’s house down, you should be out voting.
Yeah the lines are long, but you’re really going to want to be able to say that you voted in this election, which is unquestionably historic. There have only been two moments in my life that I really felt like I was living through history: September 11th and today. But fortunately, today will be the good kind of history.
I’m not going to tell you to vote for someone in particular, but I will say that I am voting for Barack Obama. I could prattle on about change and hope and all that bullshit, but to sum it up, two years ago I couldn’t care less about politics, but since Obama started running I’ve literally been watching cable news like a hawk in between reading Politico and HuffPo, following every primary battle, debate and stump speech. It also might have something to do with the fact that in the last eight years, our country has gone to hell.
And I haven’t just jumped on the “Hope” bandwagon as some have called it, I’ve done extensive policy research and I believe that nearly all of Obama’s ideas for the country are better than McCain’s, and I could debate you for hours about any specific point. Also, throughout the campaign I’ve been disgusted with people (even some good friends) who have claimed he’s some secret Muslim sleeper agent who is going to turn our country over to Al Qaeda as soon as he’s elected. But more importantly than all that, Obama was able to do something that I didn’t think anyone could. He made me care, which is something that rarely happens in my rather cynical day to day existence.
But you know what? Get out there and vote for whoever you think will make the country not suck again: Obama, McCain, Nader, Ron Paul, Jack Bauer, whoever. I’m not being unpatriotic, but let’s face it, we’ve seen better days. So whatever, skip class, skip work just go get it done. If you don’t, you’ll wish you had for a long, long time. So find out where to vote here.
If you need me, tonight I’ll be bunkered down on the couch with my laptop and CNN, liveblogging each state as it comes in.
And remember, Quest/Ahor for Mayor.
