There’s no better way to celebrate Hanukkah than to eat a latke or two or 46. Yes, “Furious” Pete Czerwinski actually downed 46 of the greasy guys in eight minutes to win the 4th Annual National Potato Latke Eating Competition held at Zan’s Deli on Long Island, New York. The second place contestant finished only 29 latkes in the same span of time.
To put Pete’s win in perspective, 46 latkes equal an astonishing 7 pounds of potatoes (and plenty of grease thrown in there too). The previous record was what now seems like a measly 31 latkes in 2006.
Before the competition, Czerwinski, a 22-year-old Canadian student, had never eaten one latke let alone a whole lot of latkes. He’s just a bodybuilder and “a power eater” whose brain never signals that he’s full, he says. It’s a talent that comes in handy in the competitive eating world.
For a taste (pun only slightly intended) of the fierce latke-eating contest , check this out:
Isn’t it nice to see the art of binging get into the holiday spirit?
