According to a recent study, the average teenager—whether male or female—spends approximately one hour and 40 minutes in any given week watching pornography online.
The study, which was conducted by CyberSentinel, a British company that produces software designed to block specific websites and monitor a person’s use of the internet, surveyed roughly 1,000 teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19 to determine how their time online was spent.
In short, here’s what they found:
1. One hour and 8 minutes is spent researching and studying cosmetic surgery. Personally, I’ve never spent a single minute doing this in my entire life, because I am nigh perfect. (READ: I cannot afford it.)
2. Three hours and 10 minutes are spent doing homework, i.e. browsing the internet looking for the answers online.
3. One hour and 40 minutes is spent downloading or listening to music—whether legally or illegally. If I were a betting man, I would say that torrents were involved.
4. Two hours and two minutes are spent on YouTube, undoubtedly looking at funny videos of people calling Comcast to fix their broken cable television.
5. One hour and 15 minutes are spent on dating sites chatting with strangers who are most likely posing as underage members of the opposite sex.
The results of this study are a bit baffling to say the least.
How can any self-respecting man spend more time on YouTube than watching pornography? Is that even possible? There are pop-ups leading to salacious material on pretty much every male-orientated website on the internet. Plus, places like MySpace are inundated with pornography spammers, so you’re bound to accidentally click on something at one point or another.
Then again, this study is about teenagers. So, perhaps the next one will find that as a teenage boy becomes a man his online and biological priorities shift.
