Stupid College Kids Caused the Montecito Fire

The massive fire in Santa Barbara this past weekend has been chalked up to careless college kids failing to listen to Smokey the Bear. They made a bonfire which they left smoldering throughout the night so that the embers drifting away and burned down half of California. Fortunately now, the fire is contained.

The 11,234-acre fire in the San Fernando Valley was 85 percent contained; About 50 miles to the south, the last remaining evacuation order was lifted in Orange County, where a nearly 29,000-acre complex of fires was 90 percent contained and some of the 3,760 firefighters were being sent home.

For a second day, officials allowed residents to return to the Oakridge Mobile Home Park in Sylmar for a few minutes to salvage what they could from acres of ashes. The fire burned about 480 homes and left 125 standing.

Police are not releasing the name of the college the students attended, and it’s probably going to be tough to narrow it down as there are 20,000 colleges in California. Let’s just call it UC - Santa Barbara and be done with it.

Let's just call it Westmont College since the teahouse location is a popular partying spot right above the campus. Posted 11/19/2008 4:48 PMReply

there was an official press release saying all students were from the same school and that none of them were from westmont (from the sheriff's dept). its insensitive to blame them after they lost a lot and were greatly affected by this fire. they had and still have to put up with a lot of negative press and threats bc of allegations (even after the press release).
