Welcome to, what I hope, will be a recurring segment of articles. As I spend my days out there in the Internet, certain themes or patterns begin to arise. Whether it's in influx in celebrities registering an account on Twitter, people getting Nintendo-themed tattoos, or any other trend, I'll try to highlight as many as I can.
For the first entry in this series, I'd like to discuss something near and dear to my heart- Garfield the cat. Since this famed feline graced the funny pages around the world, the Internet has given new life and some bizarre twists to the Garfield formula. Here are four variations on Garfield which prove that fans of Jim Davis' cat are a little crazy.
Lasagna Cat
Perhaps one of the most well-crafted tributes to Garfield, this series of web-videos pairs real-life reenactments of the comic strips with subsequent music videos. The humor is bizarre, dark at times, but ultimately infectious. The amount of energy, effort, and talent needed to make these videos is impressive as well as appreciated. The series toes the line between parody and loving tribute but is worth a look for any Garfield fan.

Garfield Minus Garfield
Featured in popular media outlets like Entertainment Weekly, this project has probably been seen by some of you. Still, it's an example of what happens when something like Garfield exists today to which millions of people have access. The character has become a ubiquitous part of pop culture and it was only a matter of time for someone on the Internet to create a project like this. 33-year old Irish artist Dan Walsh has removed Garfield from the comic strips. The effect, according to the artist's website, “reveals the existential angst of [Garfield's owner] Mr. John Arbuckle.” Hilarious, thought-provoking, and definitely crazy, Garfield Minus Garfield is a product of our time.

Realfield
The concept behind Realfield is simple- replace Garfield with a more realistic-looking feline and the results are hilarious. You quickly realize that the whole premise of a man yelling at a cat for twenty years is a bit strange, a little sad, but still very funny. It's interesting to see what one little change to the formula of Garfield can do to the overall effect of the strip.

Garfield Randomizer
The creator of this Garfield project realized that if one were to randomly put together three cells from different daily strips, the results would be just as funny. The outcome ranges from confusing, to something even more hilarious than the original strip. The Garfield Randomizer is another example of Internet-age ingenuity combined with everyone's favorite pasta-loving pet.
