Thanks to You, Michigan OTR is the Best College Blog in the Nation
Puppies for everyone!

As of midnight last night, Michigan OTR was voted the best college blog in the country by a US News and World Report survey. We were up against some of the best schools in the nation including Harvard, Columbia and Berkeley so the victory is all the more gratifying. Big Ten represent. Also, we were locked in a battle for votes (and a fair amount of trash talking) with Wesleyan for the duration of the contest, but thanks to your voting, we pulled out the win 49% to 33%, which could be due largely to my promise of a puppy to each voter. I think I owe like, 5,000 or so dogs now. Yikes.

Yeah I'm sure most of you don't care and wish this was a post about ADPi or something, but this is pretty cool to win so there are a few people to thank:

First, my co-editor AHor, who did just as much shit as me to get out the vote for this contest and for helping keep this site alive with new material every day.

Doug and the OTR staff, for hosting this site and giving us total creative freedom to write about anything we want.

Friends and family,  I know it's embarrassing to create a Facebook event and invite everyone you know to vote for some cartoon character's college blog, but you did and you guys rock. And grandma, thanks for voting on your twenty year old Mac.

You, the readers. I'm not sure who all reads this site. According to my influx of new Facebook friends it's everyone from Umich Greek life, to GDIs, to high schoolers, to people in other states. So all of you, thanks. Without you this site wouldn't be around at all.

So yeah this was cheesy and sentimental and all that bullshit and I'm sure will earn a post making fun of us by Wesleyan, but I really do appreciate all of you. If you want your promised puppy, swing by my place, and we'll do some shopping at the Humane Society. And with that, we resume your regularly scheduled programming.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but your accolade is purely arbitrary, gained by whoring for votes from random strangers and close friends and family that you conned/begged into clicking a button.

Also, it was a web poll on a blog on the US News website, hardly an official title. I'll concede that it is a cool honor, but come on already:
"Best College Blog in the Nation"? Are you serious?

Johnny Megalomaniac...I mean, Quest.

"your accolade is purely arbitrary"

Who the hell talks like that?

Sounds like someone at Wesleyan is a little bitter...

Just because we know more people that we can whore ourselves out to doesn't mean you have to get jealous.

I love you,

I go to Michigan. I have a strange feeling that there is a correlation to having a student body of 40,000 vs 2,000 and racking up votes... Posted 02/01/2008 2:58 PMReply

AHor, I talk like that. Keep up.
Also, I am not from Wesleyan. What I said is true. Pimping your grandma for votes? JQ needs to get a life. Anyway, I was going to let this go, but the "Best College Blog in the Nation" line was just so ridiculously irritating. The best blog in the nation because it rants about sororities/frats? That's just plain sad...and untrue.

@ Anonymous: oh my god, this is a blog where he talks about the Greek system using scoring areas such as "douche factor" and "campus rep" and says he'll give puppies to everyone. And anyone has to admit that the Greek articles deserve respect based upon the number of people that know about it. Posted 02/01/2008 7:02 PMReply

Congratulations JQ and AHor. It is an accomplishment, even if this "anonymous" fellow doesn't think so.

But what's with everyone spelling Berkeley wrong? It's really not that difficult.

If I don't get my puppy by 12 noon tomorrow, I will kill Travis Radina.

You have been warned.

It would make sense that this award went to a blog that garnered the most attention. It got people excited to read about stuff student newspapers can't talk about ("off the record") whether or not there is shameless plugging going on. If you wanna call it rumors or gossip, that's fine... but it is clearly the most popular and successful alternative news source and that has a lot to do with being the best. Victory isn't determined by an electoral college, so if you are a small school with a small audience like Wesleyan, don't expect to compete. Sorry… but size matters… and controversy is hot.
