Super Bowl halftime shows have been rocking the socks off of begrudging viewers since their introduction to the biggest night in football in 1967. Okay, so maybe the University of Arizona and Grambling State University marching bands didn’t exactly get anyone’s salivary glands active, but there have been several halftime shows that threatened to upstage the big butt-slapping guys running around the field in spandex— and even the commercials.

This year, Bruce Springsteen will fill the halftime slot, and considering the Steelers don’t even have their own cheerleaders, he should have no problem showing Super Bowl 43 who’s The Boss (sorry, Mr. Roethlisberger!) So in honor of the performers who have flexed their muscles for the NFL and made major musical touchdowns, here’s a rundown of The Best Super Bowl Halftime Performances: Janet Jackson to Ella Fitzgerald.

Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Nelly, P. Diddy, Kid Rock 2004
Better known as the incident of the Nipple Seen ‘Round the World, the 2004 Super Bowl included a stable of pop stars all left gaping as Janet Jackson’s purported wardrobe malfunction left one of her puppies exposed. Choreographed or not though, the slippery nipple proved more illustrious than the game itself.

Prince 2007

“Purple Rain” was imbued with a new sense of meaning as Prince tore it up under showers at the 2007 Super Bowl and showed America that no matter how many names an artist goes through, no matter how many snide Jehovah’s Witness jokes, he can still say to the world, “Baby I’m a Star.”

Diana Ross 1996
In 1996, Diana Ross took the Super Bowl higher with a medley of her hits sung with the biggest gospel choir seen in football history. Leaving the performance in a helicopter, Diana Ross showed Sun Devil Stadium how Motown gets down.

Michael Jackson 1993
MJ has been able to somehow transcend bad hair, bad cosmetic surgery, and allegations of bad behavior with little kids to moonwalk his way through stardom, including a killer performance at the 1993 Super Bowl in which he popped, locked, and crotch grabbed true to form.

Ella Fitzgerald, Carol Channing, Al Hirt, and USMC Drill Team 1972
Five words can say it all: Ella Fitzgerald singing Louis Armstrong.  It doesn’t really get much better than that. And while this may not be your idea of a killer Super Bowl halftime show, that’s probably just because you’re a tasteless fool.
