The Demise of the Big 3 Can Equal Big Trouble for Purdue Students and Grads

As the state of our domestic auto industry holds in the balance of our elected officials, I deem it necessary to take a different turn in my writings, and to explain what many people our age do not understand about the industry.

Most people have no personal stake in the matter, but I do. I, and I'm sure some fellow classmates have already been affected by this. It has always been my dream to work in management for one of the Big 3 automakers, and now, I see that as merely a miracle.

Most people who don't have a personal stake in the auto industry don't understand a few simple things; it will affect you too! Just think about it--- automakers (who employ more than most other industries) go under and thousands lose their jobs, including the supplies and delivery companies who supply the factories.

Next,  who is going to be shopping at the clothing store you own, or who is going to be living at the apartment complex you manage? It sure won't be the autoworkers. And from there, it continues to trickle down to just about everyone.

I personally just ask each of you to take a moment and think about how it could personally affect you. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but at some point, it can, and probably will affect us as college students, and soon to be graduates if something is not done soon.
