Who else is sick and tired of hearing about John “The Maverick” McCain and Barack “Yes We Can” Obama?
Bueller… Bueller…
Nobody, huh? That’s unsurprising, especially after last night’s cat fight between the two presidential hopefuls.
Still, it’s time for a change of pace, everyone. There are several other people running for president, and they desperately want their fifteen minutes in the limelight.
And so, three of them – Ralph Nader (Independent), Chuck Baldwin (Constitution Party) and Cynthia McKinney (Green Party) – have concocted a scheme to brute force their way into the public spotlight by hosting a debate of their own at Columbia University.
Does anyone care? According to Columbia Political Union’s Communications Director, Lauren Salz, they do.
“A couple weeks ago, we started talking to people in the Nader campaign, and it progressed from there,” CPU Communications Director Lauren Salz, BC ’11, said. Salz is also executive director of the CU Republicans.
Although CPU invited all eligible candidates for the presidency, Senators Barack Obama, (D-Ill.), CC ’83, and John McCain (R-Ariz.) have not made plans to attend.
“We’ll have more tickets than for ServiceNation, and it will be an actual debate,” Salz said of Sunday’s anticipated event.
For the uninitiated, ServiceNation is an organization that advocates public service, and both McCain and Obama spoke out on its behalf at Columbia last month.
In other words, Salz believes that the turnout for this debate will exceed that of the McCain-Obama ServiceNation forum.
Dare to dream. If they found enough people to fill the seats, I’d be shocked.
