To add a little sizzle to your summer, MSNBC is listing the World's Sexiest Beaches of 2008. Unfortunately, most college students won't have a chance to visit Greece, Australia or Mozambique this year. But that doesn't mean they can't take in the sun, sand and skimpy bikinis at more local hotspots.

With that in mind, I present the Top 10 Schools Near Beaches so that students everywhere can have a little sexy time.

  1. University of Miami: Only steps from South Beach, students here can spot more than a few topless sunbathers by day, and party hard by night.
  2. Pepperdine: With hard decisions like Laguna beach or Malibu beach, it's a wonder people make it to class at all.
  3. University of Hawaii at Hilo: Surrounded by beautiful beaches and towering volcanoes, things get plenty hot at this educational getaway.
  4. Flagler College: Students at this strict school can let loose at Florida's St. Augustine beaches, the same magnificent oceanfront sites that made Ponce de Leon stop in his tracks.
  5. University of California, San Diego: Perfect weather and perfect beaches abound. Who could complain about that?
  6. University of Texas at Brownsville: This semi-tropical paradise is only a five minute walk to Mexico and a thirty minute drive to South Padre Island.
  7. University of North Carolina at Wilmington: Sun-seeking students here are close to Myrtle Beach, a popular beach destination for oceanfront fun.
  8. SUNY Stony Brook: During the summers on Long Island, Main Beach, East Hampton is the place to be for hot coeds and a legendary party scene.
  9. Monmouth University: In West Long Branch, NJ students are only steps from the Jersey shore which means endless action.
  10. Northwestern University: During the summer, the beach at NU, which is technically on a lake, attracts sun-starved sorority girls ready to shed some layers.

While an entire list of schools could be made just from Florida and California, I went for geographic diversity. But what do you think? Where did I go wrong? What else should be on the list?

At most of these college you have to drive to get to the closest beach. At UC Santa Barbara the dorms are actually at/on the beach! Posted 07/29/2008 2:03 PMReply

Re: Pepperdine, I highly doubt that the students there are going to choose to drive 2+ hours (on a good day) to Laguna Beach. Posted 07/29/2008 2:07 PMReply

UCSB should have definitely been chosen over UCSD. As previously stated, UCSB is literally on a peninsula which overlooks the water, the dorms and apartments around the university always have a party going on somewhere, and the people (read: girls) are typically hot. Contrast that with UCSD, which is near the water but has a terrible reputation of being a boring school with no parties and not the best looking of people - in essence, not a sexy school at all. I've been both places numerous times and UCSB easily takes the cake. You could even put UCLA on there because it's not too far from the beach at all but I'm probably just saying that because I went there! Posted 07/29/2008 2:16 PMReply

Either of Florida Int'l campuses are less than 20 minutes to S. Beach this beats Flagler's St. Augustien BEach by a land slide Posted 07/29/2008 2:17 PMReply

I can vouch for number one. But Northwestern University?? I live in Chicago, there is nothing great about our poisoned lake and the bits of sand associated with it. Northwestern's sororities are more likely to shed layers at the local bars and clubs than at the beach. Posted 07/29/2008 2:18 PMReply

Florida Keys Community College is literally surrounded by beaches. Posted 07/29/2008 2:18 PMReply

USF St Pete Campus, Cental Florida in Largo, St Pete College, Stetson,Eckerd and many more all less than 4 miles to the beach here in St Petersburg, Pinellas County Florida. Live on any island and take the bus to class why don't ya, Posted 07/29/2008 2:23 PMReply

SDSU is actually the sexier of the San Diego schools. And all the hot SDSU students live in Pacific Beach, which has more raw hotties per square foot than any other CA beach-town, bar none. Plus a.) The girls drink. b.) they dance, and c.) the rolled tacos in PB are awesome at 2:00 AM if you strike out. Posted 07/29/2008 2:25 PMReply

This list is seriously inaccurate. I live in Hilo, Hawai'i and went to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. There are two very very small black sand beaches here and one small surfing spot near the mouth of a river. It's incredibly duplicitous to tell kids that UH Hilo has amazing beaches when it takes two hours to get to the beaches in Kona on the other side of the island.

There are lots of great reasons to come to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, but folks who falsely tell kids that we're "near beaches" is one of the reasons we have such a high dropout rate. Hilo is a rainforest. It's also the wettest city in the United States at an average of 140 inches of rain per year. That's 100 inches more of rain per year than Seattle, WA. Telling a kid that Hilo is some sort of sunny beach paradise is cruel and irresponsible.

UH Hilo is an amazing school and there are some great instructors. But it's NOT in any way shape or form a "Sexy Beach School" or even a "Sexy School Near Beaches." That's just a straight up lie.

UCSD is boring!! And there are lots of boring, ugly people who go to school there. It is an unsexy concrete school.

UCSB definitely should have made the top of the list. Beautiful people, beautiful weather and beaches.

Whomever wrote up this list needs to go back to school! C- for effort. Do a little research next time.

The premise of the article was a good idea, but poorly executed. Only schools within walking distance or a bike ride should be considered, with priority given to those right on the beach and second to those with a great view of the ocean. UC Santa Cruz for northern California and UC Santa Barbara for southern California. Posted 07/29/2008 2:49 PMReply

Brownsville is the worst city in the world. No semi-tropical "paradise" with crap ass beaches will change that. Posted 07/29/2008 3:52 PMReply

UCSB I can say that for 4 years I could hear the ocean from my bedroom window. Never more than 100 yards away with beach access every block. Beautiful weather, wild parties, and gorgeous girls. Oh... and the school is pretty damn good too. Posted 07/29/2008 4:18 PMReply

The post above regarding UH Hilo is so totally true! Hilo has beaches, sure, but they consist of black lava rock mostly and the really pretty beaches are either on the other side of the island in Kona or on Maui and Kauai. As for the volcano, it is a long drive away from the campus and vog is a problem. But if you want a campus in an area of lush tropical greenery, many and streams waterfalls nearby, a huge gorgeous mountain sometimes capped with snow, a charming sea coast, and a nice mix of cosmopolitan people and restaurants with all sorts of different ethnic foods, then UH Hilo is your school.
