Christine Beatty, former chief of staff to incarcerated ex-Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, finally admitted that she had lied under oath. For those of you unfamiliar with the details, in addition to the text messaging sex scandal, both Kilpatrick and Beatty lied to cover up the firing of police officers. Here’s a little snippet of one of their text exchanges, paid for by the state of Michigan,
10/7/2002, 11:20 p.m.
Christine Beatty: OK, I'm feeling like I want another night like the most recent Saturday at the Residence Inn! You made me feel so damn good that night. As you can see I can't let it go! ...
Kwame Kilpatrick: I feel that we can do that in WV [West Virginia] + just relax together. I need you soooo bad. I want to wake up in the morning and you are there. Make it happen. Love ya.
This ordeal earns them the #5 slot for the top 5 perjury cases. The others are as follows,
4) Rafael Palmeiro- “I have never taken steroids, period! (Plus a finger point)”. Less than 6 months after testifying on behalf of Major League Baseball to the Supreme Court, Palmeiro was suspended 10 days for testing positive for steroid use. He was never charged for perjury, though.
3) Lil’ Kim- Lied about a shootout involving her posse outside of a radio station. She spent a year in prison.
2) Martha Stewart- Made prison “a good thing” in her time spent there after being charged with conspiracy, obstruction of justice and two counts of making false statements.
1) “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” -William Jefferson Clinton, he was acquitted.
Dishonorable Mention: Chris Webber was acquitted of perjury charges for lying to the Supreme Court regarding receiving money from Michigan booster Ed Martin. Webber was only forced to pay a $100,000 fine, but was part of the scandal that led to Final Four banners being stripped from Crisler Arena and caused heavy NCAA sanctions against the Michigan basketball program.
