Times Higher Education Releases World University Rankings, Ivy League and United States Clean House

Before viewing the rankings, let’s put things into perspective. Many Europeans have a chip on their shoulder when it comes to their education system, and they get offended when someone from the United States claims to have a larger one on theirs.

Case and point: On October 1st, an OTR editor declared that Harvard, Columbia and the University of Michigan were the most popular universities on the Internet – and by proxy the World.

To which, one angry, bitter European responded:

please remind yourselves that the United States does not equal the world. For all you know, the most talked about university on the internet is Tsinghua U., or Beijing U., or one of the IITs in India, not to mention Oxford, Cambridge, Heidelberg, and so on. We could do with a little bit more perspective in the US, and a little less self-obsession

Actually, Mr. Angry Euro, our “self-obsession” is completely valid, legitimate and warranted. Even your own magazines agree.

And so, without further ado, here are the top 100 universities in the world, according to the London-based Times:

God bless, America.

Hmmm... Let's look at population numbers. USA 300M and Britain 60M. You might expect a higher number of USA to UK universities in the list considering the population ratio 5:1 yet Universities in the list are USA 2:1 UK. Posted 10/11/2008 05:48 AMReply

I love the bit where you quote the comment saying "To which, one angry, bitter European responded" when the writing style of the comment suggests that the poster is a US citizen and not a European citizen. Posted 10/11/2008 06:39 AMReply

Don't forget that the UK is basically a US colony, and sucks up to everything the US does and says. This is not only true for UK politicians, but for the UK people and the media as well... hence the Times ranking.

Have you noticed how ALL the top 18 universities are either US or UK universities? Yeah right.

Of course if the ranking had been done by a Chinese, Indian, French or Swedish newspaper it would have been very different. It would have shown that THEIR universities are the best.

To me, all that ranking does, is to show that you own the UK. As if I needed proof of that...

And besides, 40% of Americans can’t find their own country in a world map, and 70% can’t find USA, Canada, and the Pacific Ocean.

So you have a few respectable universities? How come most professors who work there come from Europe, India, China, etc…?

What a trashy report.
Would the writer like to state his university?

Everyone should get over their own respective "my country is best" attitude. ANY of the top 10 would give you an excellent education. And thats from a european. Who cares what country they are in. Posted 10/11/2008 1:17 PMReply

Haha, I went to one of those and it really doesn't matter.

This is because business will decide how people think in the future anyway. Too many independent thinkers with a philosophical and historical perspective ask too many questions, and those greedy racey types don't like the questioning.

So this argument is for nothing.

I would like to preface that I don't have a job so yes include me on the list. Nobody responding to this list evidently has a job or life busy enough to fill their time. So, congrats to all your universities for taking our money and providing nothing. Boyaaaa Posted 10/13/2008 2:43 PMReply

Morons...

Two of the Top Two are U.S. universities. As are 6 of the Top 10.

Someone referenced population, I reference age. The U.K. is how much older than the U.S.?

Genius #3 - there are 100 schools on the list. There was a tie for 99th.

Lastly, ANY of those schools will give you a great education, except for UCLA which has a crappy football team and ugly chicks.

Actually a British magazine, the Economist, tends to look at a list compiled by the Japanese. http://www.arwu.org/. On this list, 17 of the top 20 are from the U.S., 2 are British and 1 is Japanese. Posted 10/13/2008 8:53 PMReply

Brits are always sore about something - or want to attempt acting like they are better at anything when they're not. Case in point: gloating that they won two more Olympic medals than Australia - when they didn't even sniff the top 3. Hahaha - Silly Brits. Posted 10/13/2008 9:48 PMReply

I've worn my Edinburgh sweater around the US and it says 'Established 1583', the first thing people ask is 'Is that a real University?' and the next question they ask is 'Is it in the U.S.?' Yes, but not to be confused with some University with a Scottish Tartan background on their website called 'Edinboro University' in Pennsylvania I recently came across. I can't handle that!
