Trading Campaign Funds for College Football

Who doesn’t love Ohio State football? Elected officials in Ohio certainly do.

Since 1996, officials have spent more than $400,000 to see the Buckeyes toss the old pigskin around.

Legislators, some of their staff, the governor and his cabinet, statewide officeholders, and a few other elected officials all have the option to buy tickets at face value using campaign funds. They can then watch the game themselves or give away the tickets to constituents.

This upcoming season alone, public officials have bought 773 season tickets.

Although the actions are legal, are they fair? Most alumni don’t even have access to this many tickets, so why should some rando in the state government get them?
