Two Students Killed in University of Central Arkansas Shooting

Classes are cancelled at University of Central Arkansas today after a shooting on campus last night left two students dead and another person injured.

The shots were fired outside of a UCA dorm at about 9 p.m. As of now there is no explanation for the shooting and no arrests, although a “person of interest” has been questioned. The victims have not yet been identified, since officers are still trying to reach their relatives.

Today, the 12,500 students on campus are laying low. The AP reports:

The campus was quiet Monday morning. Police cruisers circled its quiet streets and officers roaming the grounds in flak jackets and blue jeans.

"The UCA campus itself is not locked down, although officers are posted at every campus entrance, and access to campus is limited to residents and authorized personnel," UCA spokesman Warwick Sabin said in an e-mail early Monday.

[Interim university president Tom] Courtway canceled classes Monday at the university, which has 12,500 students. He said every precaution was being taken to ensure the safety of the students who remained in their dormitory rooms.

According to the UCA web site, the school will hold a press conference at 9 a.m. central time to discuss the tragedy. Check back for updates.
