Ubuntu Operating System Makes Girl Drop Out of College

Poor Abbie Schubert. First she drops $1,100 on a new Dell laptop, then it promptly locks her out of the ability to go to college. Wait, what? Yeah, there are some in between steps here.

Abbie was trying to register for online classes at MATC, but was thrwarted by Ubuntu, the Linux-based operating system which somehow ended up on her computer instead of Windows. Upon discovering this, she was understandably upset and tried to contact Dell, and what did they say?

"The person I was talking to said Ubuntu was great, college students loved it, it was compatible with everything I needed," said Schubert.

Oh well, awesome then. I mean if customer service said loads of other college students love it, then it must be fine, right? Well, there might a few small hiccups with that philosophy. Namely the fact that her Verizon internet CD wouldn't load, so she couldn't get on the internet, and she can't install Microsoft Word, which is a requirement for her online classes.

No internet + no Word = no college, and Abbie had to postpone her plans to get back to school because of Ubuntu. The latest word however, is after this story got national press, Verizon is dispatching a technician to her house and MATC says it will accept her work on any software she has installed.

Really, you needed national press to get this resolved? Hey, media, my Comcast cable is out. Get someone on that!
