University of Houston Wide Receiver Patrick Edwards Breaks Leg Thanks To Marshall Band Cart

In college football, the band is there to help its team by providing spirit and encouragement. It’s not supposed to sabotage the other team by causing a painful injury. Unfortunately, Marshall did not get that memo.

Not that Marshall’s band purposefully created a situation in which the University of Houston’s wide receiver Patrick Edwards would suffer a compound fracture in his leg. But, by leaving a band equipment cart just out of bounds in the endzone, that is just what happened. A too deep pass led Edwards to run right into the cart. If you want any idea of how painful that must have been, just take a gander at the video above. FanIQ gives us a taste of the rage that must be filling Houston:

The incident raises one incredibly obvious question. What the hell were those carts doing there? That was an accident waiting to happen. For starters, the band is one of the more useless entities in college football. The fact that a player got seriously injured on one of their equipment carts only compounds that point.

This serious injury will take Edwards out of the game for the rest of the season and perhaps forever. You can bet Houston won’t just walk away like nothing happened. Do I smell a lawsuit? The Sporting News certainly thinks so:

"It was duly noted and I think we’ll save the conversation for another day," [UH athletic director Dave] Maggard said. "I don’t think there is any question that it is a problem. We all noticed it, and we want to find out why something like that would occur. It was a serious injury, no question about it."

Smells like the distinct, savory odor of a lawsuit frying in the hot oil of negligence.

But even a sizzling plate of a negligence lawsuit served over easy won’t put Edwards, the 2nd best freshman wide receiver in the country, back in the game.
