What was the best part of the LSU/South Carolina game? Watching the ref own South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia, practically tackling the guy.
The referee moved in and just threw his shoulder at him. There was no explanation, no apology and no punishment that I know of. An LSU conspiracy? Maybe, but either way it was pure entertainment.
Check out the video above for the smackdown. Idaho, need a linebacker?

Stumble It

Sometimes running backs like to run directly at an umpire to try and use him as a shield. If an umpire determines that a back is purposely using him as a sheild/blocker he will usually do something about it either by verbally warning the back or by knocking him on his can.
I think in this is part of what is happening here. The umpire was protecting himself and sending a message not to use him as a shield. I've just not sold on the need for matching the players footwork and then a forward motion assult on the running player.
Seems like this official had it in his mind that a message needed to be sent (maybe from a previous play?) and so he proceeded to do so with zeal and akwardness. Those two do not mix. I have a personal experiance from Jr High trying to impress a girl I liked. The zeal and akwardness I displayed, (I wont go into details) did somehow result in the same way. Her last name was actually Garcia as well. Posted 10/21/2008 12:57 AMReply
And college football is known for their "no nonsense" refs that throw flags at the drop of a dime. Time to reap what you sow umpire... Posted 10/21/2008 1:59 PMReply
BS, the ref took at LEAST three hops TOWARDS the player, so your argument doesn't hold water because it does not apply to this scenario.
The ref has problems, and he obviously shouldn't be in the game. Posted 10/24/2008 12:23 AMReply
