Tomorrow is arguably the most anticipated, monumental, significant, life-changing day of 2008: Election Day.
The first Tuesday of November always presents the opportunity to do our civic duty and vote, but this year’s decision will be even more important than American Idol’s Archuletta vs. Cook extravaganza. However, judging from America’s consistently pathetic track record, I wouldn’t be surprised if, post-election, the latter turns out to have gotten a more impressive voter turn out.
Which is why I want to reach out to the Penn (and entire) population the day before Election Day – I can’t stress how important it is for all you over-18ers to VOTE tomorrow.
I will now proceed to shoot down any petty, whiny excuse anyone may try to pull in defense of not voting:
1.) “But I don’t even know where to vote.”
Well, now you do: click here, type in your address, and find out exactly where to vote (complete with a Google map to show you how to get there).
If you live in campus housing, like the Quad, your address may not be registered in the website’s system. In that case, click here for your answer.
2.) “I have class all day and have no time to vote.”
The polls are open basically all day, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. – I’m sure you can find the time at some point between those hours. I do realize that in College Time 8:00 p.m. is basically lunch time, but I think everyone’s capable of reorganizing his or her schedule for a day and making sure to make it to the polls.
3.) “Whatever – my vote won’t matter.”
This is the absolute worst excuse in the book – honestly, at this point in the race, I’d fully support giving someone a wedgie for pulling that card, especially considering the fact that Pennsylvania is a major swing state.
As of November 1, Obama had a 52% lead over McCain’s 46% in the polls. The race is frighteningly close (regardless of which candidate you’re rooting for), which makes each individual vote all the more important.
So in conclusion: VOTE TOMORROW. VOTE TOMORROW. VOTE TOMORROW. Should I say it again? VOTE TOMORROW.
