What Should Microsoft Give Its Zune Customers for the Meltdown?

All the 30GB Zunes in the world are toast. Well, probably. At least there's no solution yet. But if they are all gone forever, what should Microsoft give out as repayment?

An Xbox 360, which totally won't die in six months.

A beta copy of Windows 7 which will not crash next New Year's eve.

A different model Zune for all the idiots who would still want one.

An iPod which will only die when Steve Jobs does. They're all connected to his lifeforce. Didn't you know that?

First of all, they're not gone forever...it's being fixed. Secondly, get over yourselves. Electronic devices can break, end of discussion. If this is something people are unable to handle, there are plenty of Amish living in my area you can go live with. Posted 12/31/2008 11:57 AMReply

My 120 is fine. Everyone (iPod zombies) needs to quit Zune hating just because it doesn't have a fruit logo. Posted 12/31/2008 11:59 AMReply

I have read on other forums that the battery fix is temporary and if the device tries to sync or reboot you are back where you started. This is a shame. I loved my Zune before this. Even if this is resolved quickly this is going to hurt what little foothold the Zune was starting to get. Posted 12/31/2008 12:04 PMReply

The battery fix is temporary and voids your warranty. One guy who tried this broke a ribbon connector, so this isn't for the clumsy or those who have never taken apart a small, delicate device before. By the way, how will Microsoft provide a "fix" for this when you can't sync a computer to your Zune while it's left in this hosed state and you can't get the device to unlock itself? May not fix so easily. The problem happens during startup and prevents it from finishing so the Zune is not recognized when you connect it to your computer resulting in no way to load a software/firmware fix. Posted 12/31/2008 12:15 PMReply

The new xbox 360s don't RROD btw. I know this because Microsoft got around to making a new motherboard before they released the Xbox 360 Elite. Now all new Xbox 360s are RROD proof.

As many know the RROD for the Xbox 360 is due to crappy thermal paste, a bad design to scure the heatsinks to the motherboard, and running 12v fans at 4.5v. Having done some easy fixes to get the fans to run at 12v I understand why they have them running at 4.5v. Its because they are really loud. Howeever, in their atttempt to please the public in one way they displeased the public in another.

As for the zunes I agree that its going to be very hard for microsoft to fix them without recalling them all or having peopple send them into M$ to have them open thenm up and disconnect the vbattery.

I'll stick with my Zune still.

FYI didn't the first round of IPods have a habit of wiping some Mac Hard Drives at times ?

I'm just one out of many , apparently, that woke up this morning to find my Zune 30gb player frozen at start-up. Since 7am this morning I've searched many forums and Zune's support page to find how to correct this problem thinking it was was just my player that froze. Hahaha (sarcastically, of course) was I wrong. To correct this problem? Would be nice if Microsoft immediately as of today 12/31/08 to address this mass freeze shutdown of their players, and have consumers return their pos players, that now are great paper weights, and return them to any store that sells Zunes and replace these fine art paper weights with their new 120gb players. Thank you for allowing me to vent. Posted 12/31/2008 1:40 PMReply

Dr. Manhattan must be a Sony fanboy. Sad that he would want to call himself a "Dr." when he is so mislead with technology. Very bias as well which shows his character is as a low life... I'd rather buy a crappy product then be a low life like this author... Posted 12/31/2008 1:57 PMReply

They will have to fix it the same way they did the xboxes and have you send them each one and replace the part or the whole thing. That will take forever. Posted 12/31/2008 6:33 PMReply

You know Manhattan, its really mature of you to make such an ordeal of a temporary software crash. What, so the iPod gets a monopoly on the MP3 industry with a 7 year head-start and then someone else comes in to level the playing field and they face the absolute bias of you? I think its time you examined yourself and try to be more fair in your judging. And to all of us worring about our Zunes dont worry, the issue should resolve itself in 2009; or we just download a fix from microsoft. Posted 12/31/2008 6:53 PMReply
