The year 2008 was an interesting one: We had an election that turned very, very ugly, pop stars rising from the has-been ashes and plenty of freakshow animals. But what made the year the most interesting? We at OTR had many an obsession this past few months, but at the top of the list are the Montauk Monster and Sarah Palin.
The Montauk Monster washed ashore in, well, Montauk in July and from then on it had a permanent place in our hearts. We pitted it against other genetically impossible animals, we wondered about its origins and we smiled as he starred in his very own commercial. In just a few short months, the creature went from a virtual unknown to the supreme Internet meme.
But just as the Montauk Monster phenomenon began to die down (just kidding, we'll always love you Monty!), a beast virtual unknown of a different kind entered our lives: Sarah Palin. She was a Republican Party created monster who burst onto the political scene with past bikini-filled pageant videos, annoying nicknames and a funny way of speaking (and naming her children). At OTR we had so much fun with Palin, we even created our own version of a Caribou Barbie and bought an actual Palin doll (two in fact!). However, just like the Montauk Monster before her, Palin is fading from our memories.
So before these 2008 obsessions completely outlive there 15 minutes of fame, we ask you to decide, in the spirit of VH1, which of these crazy creatures had the best year ever?
