WTF of the Day: "Race To Witch Mountain" Defeats "Watchmen" At The Box Office

I am perfectly aware that everything Disney touches turns into box office gold. However, there’s something very wrong with “Race to Witch Mountain,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dakota Fanning, taking the top spot from Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” this past weekend.

For one, “Watchmen” is the hotly anticipated film adaptation of Alan Moore’s now-legendary graphic novel; “Race to Witch Mountain” is a remake of a Disney film from the 70s that no one remembers or cares about in the slightest.

Moreover, when a Fox lawsuit threatened to shelve “Watchmen” indefinitely, denizens of the Internet went into an uproar, inundating forums with angry tirades aimed squarely at the Fox studio moguls in charge. Thankfully, the case was settled, and when the film was finally released last weekend, fans of the graphic novel came out to show their support, ultimately contributing to the film’s impressive $50+ million box office take.

This weekend, it was a very different story. “Watchmen” brought in a paltry $18.1 million, a whopping 67% drop from its opening weekend; “Race to Witch Mountain,” on the other hand, took in $25 million.

What happened?! Has the word of mouth on “Watchmen” been that terrible? Have fans of the graphic novel turned up their noses at Zack Snyder’s magnum opus?

On film posters for “Watchmen,” the following question was raised: Who watches the Watchmen?

Now, we know the answer, and it’s apparently nobody.
