WTF of the Day: Sci Fi Channel Changes Its Name To "SyFy"

Admittedly, I am late to the proverbial party on this one, but unless you’re the type of person who browses io9 all day, chances are you probably missed this unintentionally hilarious news nugget too.

After 16 years, the NBC Universal-owned Sci Fi Channel has decided to change its name to “SyFy.” Why? Well, they very well can’t keep calling it the science fiction channel if they’re airing wrestling and other mainstream junk, right?

Given their current crop of programming and the impending end of their most popular sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica, it makes sense. But, why are they half-assing it? Phonetically, the name is no different than the current one. They’re both pronounced exactly the same way, so the only real different is their spelling and the newly added tagline: “Imagine greater.” By “imagine greater,” of course, they mean expect a more Spike TV-style line up of shows in the forthcoming future.

Doomsday for Sci Fi fans arrives in July when the network intends to make the final, permanent switchover. I guess they wanted to give everyone ample time to adjust to the name change—that is, moan about it until their faces turn blue and they eventually, hopefully get over it.

What do you think about the name change?

It sucks. I hope they change their minds.

I like it. It's time for change.
