Your Daily Dose of Awesome: Playing the Original Mario Brothers With Hand Gestures

Remember when you first played Mario Brothers for the original 8-bit Nintendo system? At first, you were probably puzzled by the basic controls, which oftentimes required you to make Mario run and jump at the same time. However, eventually, you figured it out, and in no time at all, you were bouncing on Goomba heads and breezing through the eight worlds with minimal effort.

Now, imagine trying to do the same precise movements necessary to beat Mario, not with a classic controller, but with hand gestures via a webcam. I know what you’re thinking: “That would be impossible!” But apparently, it’s not—at least, not according to this Japanese-produced tech demo.

Of course, like many of you, I never once thought: “Hey, you know what this game really needs? A pixilated, discolored hand occupying 50 percent of the on-screen real estate!” However, you have to admit that this control method works to some extent, and for the most part, looks really fun.

I can only imagine the sort of profane hand gestures people will use to defeat Bowser, though. Yeesh!
