Hip-hop in the 1980s was a very different beast than what it is today.
It all changed after the era of gangsta rap in the 90s, but before then, hip-hop was all about cheesy rhymes and lame dance routines. Everyone was doing it, including those who had no lyrical talent whatsoever. On television and in movies, impromptu raps became a means of appearing “hip” to a broad spectrum of American’s youth. For the most part, however, they succeeded only in doing one thing: making us laugh.
Today, we can look back at it all and laugh, because, well, these rap tunes were horribly bad, terribly out of place and from a bygone era where borderline racism was the norm.
This one from the 80s film “Teen Witch,” in particular, is probably the best, worst rap I’ve ever heard in my entire life. No, I don’t think Hollywood will be “topping” this lame attempt at being culturally relevant any time soon, but frankly, that’s probably for the best.
Let’s leave hip-hop to the professionals, because the last thing this world needs is another “Top That.”
