It seems it doesn't get any easier for the college student.
Researchers from Columbia University reported that 1 in 5 students has some kind of a personality disorder or problem, MSNBC reports. The study, praised by experts for its scope and focus (specifically on young adults ages 19-25), also said that less than 25% obtain some kind of help. The numbers went even higher when it included "substance abuse" as a disorder:
Counting substance abuse, the study found that nearly half of young people surveyed have some sort of psychiatric condition, including students and non-students.
Personality disorders were the second most common problem behind drug or alcohol abuse as a single category. The disorders include obsessive, anti-social and paranoid behaviors that are not mere quirks but actually interfere with ordinary functioning.
The study authors noted that recent tragedies such as fatal shootings at Northern Illinois University and Virginia Tech have raised awareness about the prevalence of mental illness on college campuses.
The authors of the study also noted that, at our age, we must deal with "educational opportunities and employment prospects, development of personal relationships, and for some, parenthood". They, of course, failed to mention pressure to look hot, dealing with mad hangovers, and wondering why that guy you met last week at that house party hasn't accepted your friend request.
It also noted that the most common Obsessive-Cumpulsive Disorder was the most common ailment, affecting nearly 12% of surveyed subjects. They also noted that drinking and substance abuse went up about 3% in college students than non-students.
The study said its primary reason for being done was to highlight a need for changes in college mental health support, which they hope to help improve in future years.
OK, Trojans, I know finals are hard, but stick it out, power through, and remember: if you need help, just ask.
