If you’re ever feeling a little medieval or in the mood for adventure, The Cloisters provides an interesting trip. Unlike its owner, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it resides far from the Upper East Side. Unless you take a bus directly there, you will pass through Washington Heights in all of its bail bond store glory and walk up way too many steep hills in a difficult to navigate park. Once there, it’s an odd haven of art and herb gardens attempting to recreate a thirteenth century monastery. Authentic? Not quite. A lovely escape for a couple of hours? Of course. The pay-what-you-want entry fee certainly helps with the relaxation, but make sure to avoid the charter bus masses of tourists.
