I've been dying to try this innocent-looking little berry, popularly dubbed "miracle fruit," ever since it was featured in the New York Times. Word on the street (well, word in the newspaper) was that it would completely change how foods tasted, making cheese into cheesecake and radishes into something that actually tastes good. Last weekend, I was lucky enough to stumble upon some miracle fruit at Garden of Eden, a specialty grocery store charging a mere $5 a pop.
The result? Amazing! Not as amazing as NYT led me to believe, but amazing nonetheless. Lemons and limes tasted like the most delicious fruity candy I have ever had, and I had to force myself to stop eating them for fear of mouth sores and tummy aches later. I don't like beer and almost never drink it, but beer with a dollop of lemon sorbet tasted like a refreshing milkshake, as did salsa. The radishes were edible (not tasty, but edible), and cheese did taste like cheesecake. A rampage of everything in my kitchen (chips, bread, hummus, peanut butter, and so on) revealed that most things tasted the same, but I still enjoyed a blissful hour of distorted taste buds.
Keep an eye out at Garden of Eden and try some for yourself!
