As you may have read last week, Columbia was scheduled to host a presidential debate featuring all major third party candidates. As amusing as Lion Tamer's snarky post was, all 275 student tickets were actually reserved within a few hours. (Are you shocked!?!?) So what really crushed the dream and led to the cancellation of the event? The disorganized divas who run on third party tickets and the organizations who attempt to manage them.
Drama: A few days before the debate, some of the candidates decide that moderator Amy Goodman was too biased and just not good enough. They demand someone better -- Wolf Blitzer, perhaps -- and give 48 hours to deliver. Now we're getting into Disney Princess quality dreams.
More drama: The event was initially cosponsored with a group called FREE, but another group, Third Party Tickets (TPT), decided they wanted in on the action. TPT decided to announce the event on their website but mixed up little details like, oh, the time and place. Everyone -- candidates included -- got confused, and it wall all downhill from there.
We could practically make an episode of Gossip Girl: Suddenly, all of the candidates have scheduling conflicts and do whatever they can to get out of going on the date to the debate. My personal favorite excuse? Cynthia McKinney couldn't attend because her running mate had to go to a Black Panther reunion.
For anyone who cares, at least two of the third party candidates (Nader and Baldwin) debated today. If you're lucky, CSPAN will replay the coverage.
