The Top Ten Party Schools: Different Takes

The Top Ten Party Schools: Different Takes

At pub trivia last night, the audience flipped over a round asking us to name the top 10 party schools. In addition to being totally subjective, none of the various rankings agree. Some schools (Brigham Young, Liberty University, Thomas Aquinas) are obvious party black holes, and others (U Chicago, Columbia) take turns being the place where fun goes to die, but which state schools deserve the title of top party school? Bloggers may be biased, so I’ll just include two reliable sources – Princeton Review and Playboy.

Princeton Review’s Top 10
1. West Virginia University
2. University of Mississippi
3. The University of Texas at Austin
4. University of Florida
5. University of Georgia
6. Penn State--University Park
7. University of New Hampshire
8. Indiana University at Bloomington
9. Ohio University-Athens
10. University of California-Santa Barbara

Playboy’s Top 10
1. Arizona State
2. University of Wisconsin--Madison
3. San Diego State
4. Florida State
5. University of California--Santa Barbara
6. University of Georgia
7. University of Tennessee
8. Indiana University
9. Ohio University
10. McGill

Congratulations, UCSB, Georgia, Indiana and Ohio – you made both lists! But what happened to former list toppers like the University of Alabama or CSU Chico? And where are schools like UCLA and NYU where people actually leave campus to party?

You tell me – where will the best parties be when September rolls around?

Where do they get the information for these things. University of Washington had riots going from cops trying to pepperspray all of greek row and then had thier horse crew patrolling every thursday through saturday night making sure there werent any more parties. How many other schools can say that? Posted 07/24/2008 1:25 PMReply

Yeah it was tough partying like a rock star for 4 years, watching top notch athletics, dating no Asian women and then getting a job at Goldman. Man, I should have probably went to UM.

Administrators, professors, and many students at so-called "party schools" have tried to disassociate themselves from the rankings. For example, West Virginia University president Michael Garrison refused to give interviews about his school's appearance in the 2007 Princeton Review list. "I've talked to thousands of our students over the weekend and during the first days of classes. Their concerns are with their education, with their futures, and with the great year we have ahead at WVU," he said in a prepared statement. Posted 07/24/2008 4:21 PMReply

By the way, these polls are BS. They calculate the "party" level by counting the number of arrests, citations, and tickets and dividing by the number of students. You may have the biggest party school that also means you are the stupidest school for getting caught drinking. FACT. sorry bout it. Posted 07/24/2008 4:58 PMReply

Im an Ohio grad first of all. these lists are primarily BS. Penn State has the best football/tailgate atmosphere. Wisconsin wins halloween. Ohio Univeristy doesn't have a real athletic program, no big city, no nothing. Athens packes pound-for-pound the biggest punch in the country. If it doesn't, how does it continue to make the list? The school year goes into June. If you can, you have to experience OU in the spring. It'll shock you. Posted 07/25/2008 01:52 AMReply

for a school that is consistently on these lists, Ohio university is seriously one of the best kept secrets in partying. every day of every weekend from april til graduation in june there are block parties that crush some of the best at other schools. the fact that it keeps up with these schools that have amazing athletic programs and gorgeous weather year round is a testament to the amount of unwarranted partying that goes down in tiny Athens Ohio Posted 07/28/2008 11:50 PMReply

Alright....where is The Ohio State University at on these lists...EVERYBODY knows it is one of the best party schools in the nation...im not saying were number one..because i havent been to all the other colleges to experience the party scene but Columbus is rockin every day of the week!!! and all these OU lovers...the only thing they have is Halloween i will give them that but other than that there really isnt anything too special Posted 07/29/2008 02:50 AMReply

The OU lovers aren't going off just because we have Halloween. As an OU student Halloween seems more like a weekend where all the out of town people come in and experienece the drinking that goes on any night up there in Athens. Halloween is an amazing party and it is kind of the thing we are known for, but we are also the only school that consistently makes it on these lists with no big sports teams and only 17,000 students. OSU has like 3 times that and we still consume more beer than them. Posted 07/30/2008 01:27 AMReply

As a former OU student, believe me OU is not even close to being the best party. To be honest, I don't even like Halloween because there are too many visitors from all across the country. Every spring, we host PalmerFest, MillFest, and a music fest out in the middle of the country at a farm(OneFest, TwoFest...)that tops anything in the country. Palmer and Mill are absolutely crazy. I would even say that our Tuesday nights were better than most school's weekends. Posted 08/18/2008 11:19 PMReply

ok you people with the halloween and the big party week/weekend, or the football season....seriously get off it...WVU parties ALL YEAR AROUND. one damned celebration once a year doesnt qualify you as a party school. try morgantown, where every summer the city becomes deserted bc all the college kids have gone home, but the bars and house parties are STILL packed. and every other season is just the same, not just football season either. unlike your schools where you think halloween or a football game simply makes you the biggest party school, get real. Posted 08/24/2008 7:10 PMReply

OU gets dangerous at Halloween. I had a couple buddies almost die there a few years back. But in their defense there isn't much more to do in Athens than drink! I'm perfectly fine at OSU. We have a more consistent party atmosphere all year long. The fall is nuts with football season. The winter is nuts cause we spend time trying to figure out the most efficient way to wear a beer coat. And then in the spring, everyone is glad it isn't cold as hell anymore so the only logical solution is.... DRINK!

Either way I think OU makes the list because they do the best with what they are given. Same with WVU, I've been through there and it didnt seem like there was shit to do. O well. Go Bucks!

1. West Virginia University (Morgantown, West Virginia)

West Virginia students highlight "exceptional partying," "some of the best NCAA football," and "amazing" tailgates as the school's social staples. Of course, while there are plenty of high-octane parties, there's also an alcohol-free program each weekend called WV Up All Night. Here students can enjoy "movies and comedy shows and games and free food at the student center." Hometown Morgantown also earns high marks. Students praise its "refreshing, slower pace of life" as well as "the 15 bars downtown that are no more than 80 feet from each other."
