While questing for apartments in Park Slope, I stumbled upon Babeland, a sex shop that offers "top quality products, a pleasant place to shop, and most of all information and encouragement to women who wanted to explore their sexuality." The vibe was basically kinky sh*t for classy ladies, and I'll admit that I was left with a number of questions:
Is there really a large market segment of women who are ladies on the street but freaks in the bed?
Is it weird that there is a couple in here with their child, or am I just prude?
Is it weird that I'm a college senior and have never been in a sex shop before?
What is that for?
Does the world really need 200+ different types of vibrators and dildos? Really?
Why can't I taste test the chocolate body paint and edible lube? BOO.
What else lies inside? See for yourself in Park Slope, on the Lower East Side, or in SoHo.

Stumble It

1. If you want to call them "freaks" for exploring their sexuality, then yes. Babeland gets almost as many male shoppers as female so it's not just for the "ladies". Also, I would take issue with your definition of everything in the store as "kinky". "Kinky" has no definition; for most people it's just anything more extreme than what they do.
2. Yes. Babies don't remember anything.
3. No. Lots of people have never been in a sex shop before. No reason to feel intimidated by that.
4. Probably orgasms.
5. Yes. Not only do people's bodies respond very differently to stimulation, but people also need different sizes, textures and styles. There are best sellers but every toy appeals to someone.
6. Because when it gets opened, the chocolate dries up before the tube is empty so they would have to keep opening new tubes all of the time. If they carry it, it tastes good.
In closing, I second your first commenter's comment. They are great - hope you had fun at Babeland! Posted 08/28/2008 07:17 AMReply
