For maybe only the third or fourth time since moving to NYC some three years ago to begin my college education at NYU, myself and some friends ventured into Times Square for a down-home Olive Garden dinner. The group was a mix of NYU students and Cooper Union students and we were going to support a friend on his birthday, and I think we were all nervous, a lot of people even backed out! In all honestly, I even expected to be wholly and terrifyingly overwhelmed by the lights, the people, and the whole myth of the Times Square experience but, as it was a Thursday night, the place was actually quite incredible. There were a good amount of tourists but not so many that we were trapped in stagnant human traffic and the lights, when it isnt so loud, are insane in a good way. Just to think about how much energy that, maybe, five block radius is sucking up blows my mind. There are billboards - moving billboards - there are giant M&M screens, a building glowing with spinning and swirling enormous replicated candies of all kinds, there are marquees and flashing lights and dozens of other things prone to prompting seizures but boy, was I glad to make my return to the center of the city.
Typically, I assume that Times Square would be far too much for any person to handle but on occasion I have determined that it can be a fun place to trek to. Considering its a sort of interconnecting subway mecca its actually really rather easy and quick to arrive upon, but that time is made up for in the effort to nagivate around those huge long blocks and all the people. That is, however, the experience to go for. Its such a stereotypical New York place full of endless movie scenes and people who just dont belong in Manhattan and thats why it was great. I know that the typical NYC college student doesnt want these experiences but rather craves the nitty gritty moments that make for best selling coming of age novels but man, oh man...Times Square. Forever.
