So President Bacow and about 300 other presidents of American universities took out a full page ad in the NY Times yesterday protesting the British University & College Union's boycott of Israeli academic institutions.
Wait ... Britain's WHAT?
Okay, I realize that America is kind of flying solo in how strongly it supports Israel compared to how a lot of other countries feel, but I mean, come on. Do British profs really disagree with the Israeli government's actions more than they disagree with the North Korean, Chinese, Sudanese, or (let's admit it) ours? And since when is boycotting schools the move to make if you don't like a military? I thought professors were supposed to be smart. Especially Brits. I mean, listen to their accents! You've got to be smart if you pronounce "idea" with an R at the end, right? I guess not.
Did the British UCU really expect American universities to respond with anything other than a "boycott them and you boycott us too?" I'm pretty sure there's a higher number of Jews in American academia than there are Jews in Israel, after all.
