In Los Angelas, artist Joshua Callaghan has been doing his part to beautify the street.
Living in the city, your normal route to and from class is cluttered with man-made objects that pop out of the sidewalk. Street signs, parking meters, newspaper boxes, electric boxes--most importantly electric boxes stand in the way of a beautiful view of the passing cars.
In LA, specifically Culver City, Callaghan has been modifying electric boxes to make things just a little bit more pleasing to the eye. He takes the surroundings, and paints them onto the large, grey metal boxes in an attempt to disguise the fact that the modern U.S. city looks somewhat like a Monopoly board dotted with houses, except these "houses" aren't bright red and fun, they're big, grey and full of electricity.
Callaghan seems to focus on contrasting man and his environment by painting the plants that were probably uprooted by the electric boxes that now grace the striped concrete.
Now, this is an open call to Mr. Callaghan. Please come to BU. Right now they're working on the Commonwealth Ave beautification program, but it's a slow process and there's still quite a bit of unsightlness that needs to be dealt with.
