My First Presidential Election (That Matters) and How SNL is Changing Everything

This November will be the first time I can vote in a presidential election. And with all the media coverage, there is an overwhelming amount of people telling me the differences between Barack Obama and John McCain. Both promise to make America a stronger, better country, and yet lately, the media focus has moved away from the actual candidates for president to the vice presidential candidates.

Well, one in particular: Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, and running mate of John McCain. Joe Biden fades into the background of vice presidential debates as people wait to see what dumb thing Palin will say next. My personal favorite was her claim that she had experience in foreign matters. Apparently, in Sarah Palin’s opinion, living in Alaska counts as actually having some kind of foreign affairs experience just because she can see Russia from her backyard. Interesting. Well, this changes everything.

The media loves to poke fun at this woman from Alaska, to such a point of “Saturday Night Live” moving to a special political hour on Thursdays to have more televised opportunity to laugh at this woman. “Saturday Night Live”, on Thursdays? All because of the American people’s love for Tina Fey poking fun at Sarah Palin’s accent and lack of knowledge. What a moneymaker she’s turning out to be.  My personal favorite SNL skit on the VP candidate is the interview with Katie Couric (www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/couric-palin-open/704042/) because so much of it wasn't even a spoof, but actually real things that Palin said.  Genius.

And although I haven’t totally decided on whom to vote for in November, I’m seriously considering the Republican ticket just so that “SNL” will have at least four more years of great jokes based on the governor. It certainly would be a funny four years!
