Update: Suicide Jumper Probably Not a Cornell Student

Yesterday, an unidentified man leapt headfirst into the Cascadilla Gorge from the College Avenue Bridge near Cornell University. Since then, the jumper has been identified by the authorities, but his name is being withheld until his family has been notified of his death.

Still, early reports suggest that the man was most likely a resident of Ithaca, not a Cornell student.

Speaking with the Cornell Daily Sun, Dean of Students Kent Hubbell commented, “I wouldn’t conclude it was a [Cornell] student. From what I can tell, it doesn’t seem like it was.”

Despite Hubbell’s doubts, however, there have been five suicides at the university since 2002, so it is not completely outside the realm of possibility.

More as it develops…
