Oh hell yes. No idea how this flew under the radar, but Cornell S&TS professor Rachel Maines' 1999 book, "The Technology of Orgasm: Hysteria, the Vibrator and Women's Sexual Satisfaction" was recently turned into a feature-length documentary that premiered at NYC's Lincoln Center last week.
See that thing in her hand? Yeah, okay. That's an ancient vibrator. According to the Chronicle article about the vibrator lady, that thing was a "labor-saving device" doctors used to use to cure women of hysteria. Jesus, if someone put that thing anywhere near a vag today it would for sure cause hysteria... and likely violence. Needless to say, I would not be rushing to switch the batteries out of my alarm clock for that shit (if you catch my drift).
In other news, the Chronicle published a whole 400-plus-word piece on this (yay!) but managed to do so without using the word "masturbation" at all, opting to refer to the act of women gettin' down with their hot selves as "the M-word" instead. Eh, baby steps.
