The Boston Globe reported that a new housing project for UMass Lowell was halted because the public construction project never went through state bidding; it was just handed off to a private developer. Now this over packed campus will have to wait a long while before appropriate housing is built to accommodate its students.
UMass isn’t the only campus to suffer packed housing though, here’s a list of colleges that have moved their students off campus for housing.
Northeastern University – Sprawling across the central Boston area, the university is left with little room to place students leaving all space as fair game. When on-campus dorms filled up, students were forced into the YMCA of Greater Boston, which consequently was also a rundown hostel.
Montclair State University – With over 13,000 undergrads, this New Jersey state school has been raking in the students leaving little space on campus to house them. The university has struck a deal with a local Quinta Inn and now students can enjoy bigger beds, televisions and bathrooms they share with only their roommates.
Rutgers University – Located in one of the worst areas of New Jersey, off-campus housing at Rutgers breeds rape and murder. Every few weeks, a new story will arise about criminals climbing into students’ windows to loot, maim or rape.
University of Hawaii at Hilo – Not only do UH students get the chance to live in the breathtakingly beautiful town of Hilo but they get to stay in amazing hotels. Students have the option of choosing to live in a hotel, an apartment complex or a house - most of which are gorgeous.
UC Santa Cruz – If the beauty of Santa Cruz doesn’t get you, the university-owned hotel will. Fully equipped with cable television, housekeeping, a pool & a hot tub, the University Inn at Santa Cruz is an absolutely blissful welcome to transfers and grad students.
