Somehow I never pictured fellow Ivy league students from Dartmouth as “the common bro.”
Nevertheless, two Dartmouth students created a website all about Obama made for just this kind of “dude.” Brobama.org, started by rising seniors Lee Cooper and Scott Henning, summarizes important political news into shorter, more understandable “bro” language.
You’ve gotta love the dumbing down of America.
For each piece of “brolitics” (that’s politics for those of us unversed in bro-speak), the students break down the information into news, context and what this means for the common bro, with the option to read more.
While the idea is noble, I think the frat brothers are slightly underestimating college students’ intelligence and overestimating how many bro-ified words we can stomach.
Check out some examples of this scholarly commentary:
The FISA Broblem
NEWS: Liberals criticize Obama for supporting FISA legislation
CONTEXT: FISA bill infringes on civil liberties and retroactively lets phone companies off the hook for unconstitutional work with the National security Agency after September 11.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE COMMON BRO: Don’t worry: embarrassing, emotional conversations with the g/f will not be on speakerphone in Congress.
Speaking Brolingual
NEWS: Obama thinks more Americans should be bilingual.
CONTEXT: People are upset Obama said Americans “need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.”
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE COMMON BRO: Knowing another language is clutch: “Donde esta el beer pong?”
Too Old School?
NEWS: McCain’s age more of an issue than Obama’s race.
CONTEXT: 23% of Americans think McCain’s age would make him less effective as president.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE COMMON BRO: Can a dude still be your bro if he’s old enough to be your granddad? The significance of age is debatable, but McCain’s choice of V.P. will be more important now.
