Hanover Hotels Still Willing to Host Dartmouth Events In Spite of Police Raids, Underage Drinkers

Two years ago, the Hotel Coolidge hosted a Greek formal that ended with a female attendee vomiting on a police officer and the establishment temporarily losing its liquor license. Last fall, the Alpha Xi Delta formal, hosted at the same venue, ended with a police raid that led to 35 citations being issued.

However, despite all these legal woes, hotels in the Hanover area are still willing to host student-sponsored functions year in and year out.

After all, the fines and penalties incurred from a night rife with drunken debauchery are insignificant when compared with the money earned from hosting a Greek formal attended by hundreds of students.

The Dartmouth reports:

Hotel employees check student identification and visually assess students attending the formal to determine if they over over-intoxicated, Briggs explained.

“The practical reality is, that if you’re not acting intoxicated when you get off the bus, you won’t get caught,” he said. “If you fall on the ground or throw up on a policeman, you’ll get caught. It’s the law of the jungle.”

Wait visual inspections? Why not invest in a breathalyzer? At least then it would appear as if they were trying to curb underage drinking.

Pregaming isn’t going away any time soon, so it’s probably in a hotel’s best interest to try and police it rather than turn a blind eye to it.
