When I decided to major in European intellectual history (i.e. philosophy), my parents told me I’d make crap for money upon graduation. As it turns out, they were completely right, but a new study published in the Wall Street Journal makes me feel like slightly less of an pragmatically-challenged liberal arts delinquent. According to said study, college grads majoring in philosophy earned 103.5% more than their original income 10 years after graduation, much more of a salary augmentation than the even less practical drama majors had.
The Wall Street Journal reports:
A year-long survey of 1.2 million people with only a bachelor's degree by PayScale Inc. shows that graduates in these subjects earned 103.5% and 97.8% more, respectively, about 10 years post-commencement. Majors that didn't show as much salary growth include Nursing and Information Technology.
So if you’re worrying that your philosophy major won’t ever do much good, you may be correct. Your salary probably won’t stay stagnant though.
