College: The Musical

College: The Musical

Last week, male a capella group the Pitchforks [amazingness] teamed up with sketch comedy group Inside Joke [yawn] to produce “College: The Musical”. Expecting a blend of clever song performances and witty banter, I was a tad bit disappointed. The performance was far from a musical or even, really, a collaboration between the two groups. Instead, it felt like two separate events, an a capella concert and a lame comedy show, shoved together into one time slot for the sake of saving money.

IJ’s skits were as worn out as K.ville’s turf after the Duke-UNC game, but the Pitchforks made up for it by charming the crowd as always. Incorporating a tight-clad, male interpretive dancer into their performance of “I’ll Make Love to You” or tossing wads of fake money in the air to “Make It Rain”, they kept the crowd roaring with laughter. They’re easily my favorite all-male a capella group on campus since their performances are all about having fun, not just singing well. (Pitchforks, you rule.)

I left after they performed their last song since I wanted the night to end on a good note and I didn’t want to sit through the second half of IJ’s stereotype-ladden skits. It was an overall decent performance, but IJ really needs to pick up its act for next year.

At least they served free beer.
